The AS scores - what are they?
The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI)
The BASDAI score measures the main symptoms of AS such as fatigue, back pain and morning stiffness. The final result is a score out of 10 and is based on answers to six questions. The higher score, the worse the symptoms.
Spinal pain is measured separately from the BASDAI score as a mark out of 10.
The Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI)
The BASFI score measures how much your AS is affecting your ability to carry out everyday tasks, like putting on socks or climbing stairs. It is based on your answers to ten questions. A higher score generally means that your AS is having more impact on your ability to carry out everyday tasks.
Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI)
The WPAI score measures your ability to work during the last week, be it in a job or at home. It is made up of four different types of
- Absenteeism: How much time you were away from work because of your AS
- Presenteeism: How much time you spent at work, but were unable to fully function because of your AS
- Work productivity loss: How much you felt your productivity at work was affected by your AS
- Activity impairment: How much you felt your productivity at performing everyday tasks was affected by your AS
Your final WPAI score is a percentage out of 100. The higher the score, the more AS is affecting your ability to work.
